Date Night: three in one

Although I was super busy when Robert came home last week, we did find time to go out for a much needed date night. We decided to make the most of the night and went to three different restaurants.

We started at Spitfire in south Fargo, where we got a smoking hot appetizer called little spitfires. Boy, were they spicy! Chicken-filled jalepenos with bacon wrapped around them – good but too spicy for this one!

After cooling down with a few glasses of water and an order of french fries, we made our way over to Olive Garden. We were feeling really hungry, so we order a lasagna fritta appetizer, along with salads and of course their delicious breadsticks. We ended up taking some of the appetizer home. We overestimated our hunger and ended up taking the rest of our appetizer home, so we could save some room for our last stop: Applebee’s.

Robert had received a gift card for Christmas and we hadn’t quite used it up yet, so we decided to hit up Applebee’s for a little dessert to finish a wonderful night. After letting all of our other food settle over a drink and good conversation, we decided on the hot fudge sundae dessert shooter and the brownie bite – the perfect, sweet treat to finish our night.

Although we just went out to dinner, I loved that our date was “non-traditional.” Going to three different restaurants allowed us to not only get a wide variety of food but also have three completely different experiences and conversations.

What’s the most non-traditional date you’ve been on?

DIY Halloween Costumes

Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s the only time that it’s completely acceptable to not be yourself. In fact, if you go as yourself, it’s kind of lame. But I’m sick of seeing the same costumes over and over again: the french maid (yes, I admit I’ve done it before), the naughty nurse, the witches, the fairies…you get the point. I admit my choice of costume this year wasn’t the most original or unique, but what made it great was the fact that I didn’t buy it in a package at Halloween Express.

I guess you could say my Halloween costume was a DIY project. It all started when I decided that I didn’t want to wear a “slutty” costume this year. I wanted something I could have fun with, not a costume out of a package. I immediately thought of the 80s. I’ve always loved bright colors and always had a fascination with 80s style.

When I went to the mall, I began looking for bright pieces that would ultimately make my 80s costume. I found these bright pink tights at Forever 21 and knew they were perfect! After purchasing the tights, I decided to go with a Jazzercise look and watched some 80s Jazzercise videos for some inspiration. I searched online for some bright neon leg warmers and found these neon yellow ones, along with the neon fishnet gloves. Again, perfect!

The only thing left was the top, which was the most difficult. But it all came together after a successful trip to Savers. I found this awesome neon green and black zebra striped swimsuit. Then, I searched the store for a perfect top that I planned to cut. It was between a Mickey Mouse t-shirt, a grey sweatshirt and the purple sweatshirt – I’m glad I chose the purple.

Lastly, I stopped at Target to pick up the finishing touches: some bright pink and turquoise eye shadow, bright colored headbands and bright blue nail polish. I teased my hair, using tons of hairspray, and applied a ton of turquoise eyeshadow to complete the look.

My overall look incorporated all the things I love about 80s style: leg warmers, oversized tops, bright colors and bold make-up.

Robert also had an amazing costume this year: Psy. If you don’t know who that is, you must be living under a rock or something, but click here to catch up this Youtube sensation that you’ve been missing out on.

Robert decided to go with Psy’s most distinguishable look: a blue blazer and bow tie.

He got lucky, finding an Anne Klein women’s blue blazer at Savers. He also bought a pair of women’s black pinstriped pants and a black bow tie to complete the look. He wore a white button-up shirt he already had and his white and red Adidas, so he could dance. He used a ton of gel and hairspray to get his hair just right and completed the look with his sunglasses. It was the best Psy costume I’ve seen yet. Of course, it helps that they’re both Korean.

I know Halloween is over, but next year go for something creative and fun. Do-it-yourself costumes are ALWAYS the best. Be sure to choose something somewhat obvious though or you’ll have people questioning you all night.

Wedding Guest Attire Pt. 4

I published a post about finding the perfect dress for the wedding last week. It was a purple and green floral printed strapless dress that would have been perfect for a summer wedding. I bought it for the wedding I attended this last Saturday, but I never wore it.

I was in a bit of a hurry when I bought the dress and I knew it was too big, but I thought I could make it work. However, when I tried it on again, I realized there was no way I could wear it to the wedding. I brought it back to 20 Something on Friday and luckily they had received a few new dresses including one I absolutely loved: a red spaghetti strap knit dress with rhinestones braided into the straps.

I paired it with a cream cardigan and stilettos to create the perfect outfit for a wedding. I finished the look with a rhinestone bow pendant necklace, curly hair and my favorite accessory – my matching boyfriend! :)

Wedding Attire Pt. 3

I’ll be going to another wedding this Saturday, so I’m on the hunt for the perfect dress. I want to go for something fun and flirty with a colorful summer print this time. As I searched the internet for the perfect dress, I put together this Polyvore. Being in Litchfield and working in Willmar, I’m very limited on my choice of stores, so I made the Polyvore with dresses only from Herberger’s.

Wedding Guest Dresses

These dresses are great for summer. Finish the look with a short necklace, a cardigan and some strappy sandal wedges for the perfect wedding guest look.

Check back next week to see if I found my perfect dress!

Wedding Guest Attire Pt. 2

If you’ve been invited to a wedding with a semi-formal dress code, head over to Lulus and check out their special occasion dresses. They have a wide variety of styles and colors. Just don’t choose a white dress!

Here are a few dresses I found on Lulus that I wouldn’t mind wearing to a wedding. The two on the left are great transitional pieces as they could be worn in a business setting as well. But, if paired with the right shoes – strappy black high heel sandals – and the right jewelry – anything sparkly, they would be perfect for a wedding. The dresses on the right are more fun and freeing. I love the shear fabric and the flowing shapes. These dresses are perfect for a semi-formal or semi-casual wedding. Dress them up a bit with some jewelry and cute high heels and add a jacket or cardigan.

I love all these dresses because you can wear them for almost any occasion, yet they are still appropriate for a wedding.

Date night: Purple, pasta and a late night walk

After a long, sleepless week, I was more than excited to see Robert for our date night Friday. We both arrived at my parent’s house in Becker around 7 p.m. and quickly changed for our date. We decided to match and both wear purple. I chose a beautiful knee-length floral dress from Dress Barn paired with my white eyelet jacket from Forever 21. Robert wore a purple dress shirt and dark purple tie with gray dress pants.

We arrived at Biaggis in Maple Grove just in time for our 8:30 p.m. reservation. We must have looked good because the hostess and waitress asked what the special occasion was. It was my first time at Biaggis, and sometimes it’s hard to know how formal a restaurant is. But, I don’t think we were overdressed. After all, a grooms dinner was taking place just across the restaurant. The food was good and the service was great. We ordered fried ravioli, chicken primavera pasta and creme brulee for dessert. It was a wonderful dinner followed by a late night walk around the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes, the outdoor mall.

Wedding Guest Attire Pt. 1

My favorite time of the year is here: summer wedding season. I love any excuse to go shopping and pick out a new dress, which is exactly what I did last Thursday. Living in Litchfield and working in Willmar has really limited my shopping choices for semi-formal dresses to JCPenney and Herbergers at Kandi Mall in Willmar.

I came across a gorgeous little dress that I would have loved to buy, BUT it was white. And although some people say it’s no longer “off-limits” to wear white to a wedding, I can’t stand the thought of wearing a white dress to any wedding other than my own. Luckily, I found this absolutely gorgeous pale pink lace overlay dress instead.

As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was perfect. And I knew exactly how I would style it. I paired it with my Lace Harmony Seychelles wedges and a white jacket from Forever 21 (it’s okay to wear white accessories). The light dress was perfect for the hot and sunny wedding day.

Shopping for wedding guest attire is fun and exciting, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Stay away from a lot of white. It’s the bride’s day, not yours, so save yourself from upsetting the bride and choose a different color.

2. Stay classy. There will be guests of all ages at the wedding including the bride and groom’s grandparents, so don’t wear anything too short. And if you chose a strapless or spaghetti strap dress, bring a cardigan or jacket to cover-up your shoulders during the ceremony.

Be sure to check back for more tips on shopping for wedding guest attire coming up in later posts.
